East London:
Adventurous & Underrated
Written by I'sean Hixon | Journalist and Video Editor based in ██████

London, not only the capital but also the largest city in all of the UK with an approximate population of over 9.7 million people living there as of 2024.[1] The city is so big in fact, that we separate London into four sections, North, West, South and my personal favourite, East London with all areas having well-known attractions and landmarks like Buckingham Palace, The British Museum and the most memorable landmark, the Big Ben clock that symbolises the United Kingdom and our democracy.
Today I plan on advising, helping and recommending you places to visit in East London, my home city! As an ex-resident of the area, it feels like my duty to promote my home area as you most likely don’t acknowledge East London as much as a place like North London where places like Cambridge and top tier universities are present, but I believe that the east has its own merits and pros that makes it special. And so, without further to do, let us begin with…
The East London Greenway

As East London is a very walk or cyclable place like most of London, it has an abundance of path and walkways[2] like the Mile End Park but three fantastic ones you should give a try when you have the desire to go on an morning or afternoon jog are: The Greenway, Lea Valley Walk and Thames Path.
The Greenway is East London’s gateway, walkway, railroad to everywhere in the city, going all the way from the west with Victoria Park to the east with Royal Docks Road (or 4.3 miles long)![3]

I went on this walkway the other day while revisiting East London for nostalgia sake and it’s a beautiful trip, with the walkway being void of any litter making it look fresh 3 decades later![4] I would highly recommend cycling on the greenway as it’s only a little over an hour and is a pretty sight with lots of greenery and even the graffiti being pretty! Overall, a great place to visit if you want to take a slow walk around East London.
For people who want to get themselves out there for some fun, I asked a citizen of the city where to go to which he directed me to...
The Escape Bar:
A Ticket To A Good Time

This pub is home to London’s best beers and cocktails along with having a pretty outdoor seating area and cosy, nostalgic feeling interior. Other than just taking your shots, you can also play many games, watch live performances and quiz nights for your “I’m not drunk” mind!

The citizen I asked stated “When I first moved here I didn’t know much people and it was a great place to meet new friends” which could help you out too if you just moved in too! It’s open from 4pm-11pm on weekdays and from 4pm-2am on weekends.
The Citizen's Recommendations:

East London is home to a lot of parks for one to relax in. I asked this woman why she likes going to parks and enjoys it “Because they’re free and the kids have loads of fun. You get a little bit of a break because the toys are entertaining.” with me seeing children around playing Football which keeps them active and healthy instead of them playing video games, watching YouTube and as the lady said, toys.
One of the best parks out there is the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. I remember my school and I running multiple miles there for some event with a bunch of other schools with me getting 4th place out of everyone in my year and 10th out of thousands of people (I used to be Usain Bolt in the flesh before I got old).
But this isn’t about me.

This park is jam packed with so much to do! There’s venues like a hockey & tennis centre, the Blossom Garden, waterways, rivers, playgrounds along with culture; art attractions and live shows! Not to mention the delicious meals they serve at Riverside East and (what I think is really special), is the Bread Street Kitchen, Bar and Rooftop by Gordon Ramsay a famous figure in the catering scene, well known for his shows Kitchen Nightmares and Hell’s Kitchen, if you have never seen his meals, do yourself a favour and visit to try the best food of your life, this park is phenomenal. Period. Full Stop. Don’t miss out.
In conclusion, East London is a criminally underrated area that more families and individuals should visit for the thrills, relaxation and amount of exploration that’s present. One of my greatest memories is simply friends, family and I going to all of these different places in East London, having such a fun time together within that environment and I hope you can create great memories there too.
But hey, that’s just my thoughts.
